Most children don't experience negative effects from the over-the-counter lice shampoos, but you should avoid any product that contains lindane.
Lindane is a powerful chemical that can cause headaches or even brain damage. If you want to try making your own head lice remedy, you can make a rinse containing pyrethin
(a safe, natural insecticide) although some children, especially if they're allergic to ragweed, may also have a sensitivity to pyrethin.Use the pyrethin rinse, wash or spray everything the child has come in contact with, including clothing, bedding, hair brushes and combs, even the backs of chairs or furniture.
Rinse the child's hair, being careful to keep away from eyes.
Follow that up by combing through their hair every night.
Use a fine-toothed comb dipped in vinegar and comb strand by strand, checking for both adult lice and eggs or nits.If your child may be sensitive to pyrethin, try this remedy,
recommended in A Modern Herbal (written in 1931):
Take the leaves of the Virginia Creeper
(also known as American Ivy, Five-leaved Ivy, Ampolopsis quinquefolia, Cissus Hederacea, Cissus quinquefolia, Vitis quinquefolia or Wood Vine)
make a decoction and apply externally to destroy head lice in children.
Another method to try:
Comb, comb, comb!!
Comb at night, because it seems easier to catch the live bugs at night
(they are very light-sensitive, but artificial light seems better than natural light, like the vampires they are).
Rinse the hair daily with the below essential oil blend and comb out every day, dipping the nit comb in vinegar
vinegar won't kill the live lice but it does loosen the adhesive the eggs are attached to the hair with.
Daily rinse of essential oils: lavender eucalyptus rosemary peppermint tea tree
Appx. 5 drops of each oil to an ounce of carrier oil
(castor, sunflower, grapeseed, olive, safflower)
and about 5 drops of that mixture to a cup of water.
This seems to be a repellent.
Roberto Markulin (rmbue@satlink.com) writes:
"My daughters were always infested with lice & nits.
We tried various methods with negative results, until one day we prepared an infusion (tea) of Quassia Amara
(also known as Simaruba - Bitterwood - Palo Amargo - Quassia Amer)
and sprayed it on their heads.
All the lice & nits were gone or died.
We keep spraying for prevention every day.Bring to boil one cup of water and add two tablespoons of Quassia Amara wood chips (from the bark) and let stand until cool.
Strain and place in a hand sprayer and add 15% of rubbing alcohol to prevent bacterial spoilage.
Discard chips.
Spray on head every day.
Lice will not appear." Thanks Roberto!
A fairly new product on the market is "NEEM OIL" shampoo. Neem oil is a natural product and comes from a tree that kills insects in the garden and now comes in shampoo form for humans. It's relatively inexpensive and can be bought at most health food stores.
Pssst!
