Macular Degeneration:

The lens in the eye focuses light images so they can be sent to the brain. To be more specific, these light images are focused on a light sensitive film in the back of the eyeball called the retina. The central part of the retina is called the macula, which is responsible for both vision in the center of our visual field, and for our ability to see color.

In macular degeneration, the macula degenerates and we lose central vision first, with the vision loss gradually spreading outward towards the periphery.
Macular degeneration (MD) is the major eye disease where bright light appears to be a problem, as it can damage the macula. Avoiding bright light, or at least using a good pair of sunglasses goes a long way to preventing this disease. But even with bright light shining right into your eyes, the macula is able to protect itself with compounds that act like "internal sunglasses," namely the orange-yellow carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin.

Many researchers and eyecare practitioners believe that certain nutrients like zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamins A, C and E help lower the risk for AMD or slow down the progression of dry AMD. Benefits of high levels of antioxidants and zinc for halting or slowing development of macular degeneration have been widely reported based on results released in 2001 from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) conducted by the National Eye Institute.

Helpful Nutrients:

Collards, spinach, kale, corn and egg yolks are all sources of lutein. Eating green leafy vegetables which are high in lutein appears to be linked to a lower risk of this disease. In one study vision actually improved in people with macular degeneration who took 10 mg of lutein per day.

Ginkgo biloba may be useful in preventing macular degeneration but it is to early in the studies to be sure.

Omega-3 fatty acids in the August 2001 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology reported findings that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, which are particularly prevalent in cold-water fish, also had a protective effect against advanced macular degeneration. But consumption of omega-6 fatty acids, in vegetable oils, was associated with an increased risk of developing AMD.

Zeaxanthin can be found in orange peppers which is the richest source, but corn and egg yolks are rich sources also. Consuming lutein and zeaxanthin can protect against macular degeneration, whether you get them from the diet or supplements. They appear to absorb better when consumed with fats or oils.

Zinc appears helpful. 40 mg of zinc was used in one study where it was able to slow down macular degeneration. With zinc's low cost, and it's other benefits like helping your immune system, heavy metal toxicity, Attention-Deficit Disorder, prostate enlargement, wound healing, etc., there is no reason everyone shouldn't be taking a little extra zinc!

Side effects from toxic drugs:

Some cases of macular degeneration can be induced as a result of the side effects of toxic drugs such as Aralen (chloroquine, an anti-malarial drug) or phenothiazine. Phenothiazine is a class of anti-psychotic drugs, including Thorazine (chlorpromazine, which is also used to treat nausea and vomiting, and intractable hiccups), Mellaril (thioridazine), Prolixin (fluphenazine), Trilafon (perphenazine) and Stelazine (trifluoperazine).

A product used in Europe for years called Carnosine Eye drops contain high concentrations of natural antioxidants that protect against cataract, macular degeneration and other ocular disorders. In the aged eye, synthesis of the antioxidant glutathione is reduced, resulting in excessive free radical damage.
Antioxidant supplements have been shown to help protect against senile eye disorders. Unfortunately, aging diminishes circulation to the eye, thereby reducing the efficacy of orally ingested supplements.
Degenerative changes in the eye often begin in middle age, resulting in macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and other forms of retinopathy in later life. Scientific studies indicate that the topical application of certain nutrients may help to prevent common senile eye disorders. In response to these published reports, an eye drop solution called Brite eyes ll™ has been developed that contains specially designed antioxidants, lubricants and anti-glycating agents.

No, I do Not sell this product, "Brite eyes ll". I am a user of it though. The studies say it takes 6 months to 2 years depending on how long you have had problem. In January of 06 my right eye WAS completely greyed over from macular degeneration.
I started using Brite eyes ll on february 14th and I can see well enough from the corner of my right eye to pick up a cup of coffee on 3/19/06.
Just as it started from the center and worked outward til I couldn't see at all in my right eye, most of ther eye is still greyed over but the outer eyesight is coming back...........slowly, verrrry slowly. But it is returning.
This to me is simply amazing, just simply amazing! And I want to tell it to the world.

5/19/06 - The center is still grayed but it "IS" getting smaller. My supplier of Brite Eyes II™ could'nt get the product, so I've been using CanC™ as a replacement. CanC™ is the original formula developed by a Russian Dr. having less ingredients (vitamin A and C) then Brite eyes ll. The good Dr. says they are not needed to do the job.

If you are depressed, if you are unhappy, you can not be healthy.
