The health benefits of regular, moderate red wine consumption were confirmed by a major Danish study which showed that subjects who consumed wine a few times a week were much less likely to die during the 12-year study period than non-drinkers or consumers of other alcoholic beverages. Financed by the Danish National Board of Health, the Copenhagen Heart Study involved more than 13,000 men and women aged 30 to 70 who were monitored between 1976 and 1988.
The results of the study, published in the British Medical Journal, indicated that daily wine consumers had half the risk of dying compared with those who never drank wine. In addition, the study found the largest benefit-a 49% decrease in total mortality-was associated with people who consumed 3 to 5 glasses of wine daily, while consumers of 1 to 3 glasses had a 30% decrease, compared with people who never drank wine. The subjects were controlled for gender, age, education, income, smoking, weight, and other factors.

The Copenhagen Heart Study differed from other major studies in that it did not find life-prolonging benefits from drinking other forms of alcohol, nor did it find health benefits beginning to diminish Above 3 glasses of wine per day. Cross-cultural analyses have reported that countries with high per capita wine consumption have lower rates of heart disease, but this is one of the first in-depth beverage-specific studies within a non-Mediterranean country to find such strong evidence of wine's beneficial effects.
The study was conducted by Morten Gronbaek and his colleagues at the Danish Epidemiology Science Center, Institute of Preventive Medicine at Copenhagen Hospital. The researchers suggest that certain substances and properties unique to red wine, such as tannins and flavonoids which act as antioxidants, may be a key factor in the protective effects of wine. They also attribute a 30% overall decline in coronary heart disease mortality in Denmark during the past 15 years to a dramatic increase in wine consumption since 1976, due to the opening of the European market. In 1975, wine consumption represented only 17.3% of total alcohol consumption, compared with 30.2% in 1992.

The Copenhagen Heart Study strongly confirms the health benefits of regular, moderate red wine consumption with food cited by many other scientific and medical studies which are monitored by the Sub commission on Nutrition and Health of the Office International de la Vigne et duVin (OIV) in Paris.

Red wine has five times the healthy phenolic compounds that fresh grapes do, and they are also much more prevelant in red wine than in fruit and fruit juices. These are twice as powerful as resveratrol, and are much more effective than vitamin E in preventing oxidation. They are found in stems, seeds, and skins, which are discarded in the making of juices and white wine, but disolve into red wine during fermentation.

Resveratrol, in particular, has been demonstrated to be a potent anti-oxidant (about 20-50 times as effectively as vitamin C alone) and act synergistically with vitamin C enhancing the effects of each. Resveratrol has been demonstrated to have an anti-clotting effect that prevents the formation of thrombi or blood clots in the blood vessels. The formation of thrombi that block small blood vessels is believed to be a cause of heart attacks and strokes. Resveratrol has been demonstrated to have anti-cancer effects as well.
The incidence of heart disease and cancer among populations who consume a lot of red wine, as in France, is dramatically less than those that don't even though they may also have a high fat diet. Resveratrol has also been demonstrated to promote the formation of new dendrites in the brain. Resveratrol and the other bioflavonoids and polyphenols are present in large amounts in the leaves, twigs and bark of the grape vines. Thus, red wine, which is fermented with the skins, seeds, twigs, etc. tends to contain much larger quantities of the beneficial substances than white wine which is fermented only from the pressed juice of the grape.

Moderation is the keyword when drinking beneficial Red Wine.

When alcohol is consumed, the alcohol level in the blood increases and produces the intoxication effect. The body then begins "detoxifying" or metabolizing the alcohol. The first step is the conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. This happens fairly quickly in individuals who regularly consume alcohol. The second step is the conversion of acetaldehyde into acetate by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. This process is a bit slower and leaves a quantity of acetaldehyde in the system for several hours or longer. It is the acetaldehyde that produces most of the undesirable toxic effects. The acetate is metabolized to produce energy much like any other carbohydrate. Excess drinking can make you fat just as binging on pasta, ice cream or any other carbohydrate would.

Acetaldehyde, produced primarily in the liver, but also in other organs to a lesser extent, readily binds to the walls of red blood cells and hitches a ride to all parts of the body including the brain. By attaching itself to the red blood cells, it makes them more rigid and prevents them from entering the smaller capillaries. (The smaller capillaries are much smaller than a red blood cell and the cell is forced to stretch, elongate and squeeze its way through.) This reduces the oxygen supply to most of the cells of the body including the brain. ( The Brain consumes 20% of all the oxygen we breathe). Acetaldehyde also combines with the hemoglobin in the red blood cells further reducing its ability to carry oxygen.
In addition to inducing hypoxia (oxygen starvation at the cellular level), Acetaldehyde reduces the ability of the protein tubulin to assemble into microtubules. Microtubules provide a structural support for the neurons and dendrites in the brain and actually transport neurochemicals manufactured in the nerve cells to the dendrites, including genetic material. Without the microtubules, the dendrites gradually atrophy and die off. Acetaldehyde also induces deficiencies in B1 (Thiamine), B3 (Niacin), NAD, Acetyl Coenzyme A, B5 (Pantothenic Acid), P5P (Pyridoxal--5-Phosphate) and inhibits Prostaglandin synthesis.
B1 deficiency can produce a syndrome characterized by mental confusion, poor memory, poor coordination and visual disturbances.
B3 and NAD (an enzyme made from B3) are involved in the metabolism of sugars and fats into energy and are an important catalyst in the production of neurotransmitters, including seratonin, and activates the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. Niacin deficiency symptoms include feeling fearful, apprehensiveness, worry, suspicion, depression, headaches, insomnia, depression, agitation and inability to concentrate.
B5 and its active form, Coenzyme A, is the most important component of the Krebs cycle which produces 90% of the body's energy. It is also the precursor of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter.
P5P is the major enzyme that is necessary to form virtually all major brain neurotransmitters. It also regulates the admission of magnesium into cells and thereby controls the excitability of nerve cells.
Acetaldehyde is also known to promote the production of opiate like chemicals in the body and promote the development of addiction to toxic substances.
Remember: Moderation is the keyword.

Elderly people who consume red wine are less prone to disability, mental illness, including Alzheimer's disease. Wine helps women maintain their estrogen level, and helps them absorb calcium, and ward off osteoporosis.

What else does wine do? Wine alters the blood lipid levels. It lowers the total cholesterol count, and raises the high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. In essence, it keeps the blood vessels clean. In fact, research in Dec 2001 showed how polyphenols in red wine - especially Cabernet Sauvignon - keeps the arteries clear. Flavonoids, are antioxidants and help prevent cancer to begin with. Also, as a stress fighter, wine is also shown to help cancer patients by relaxing them and helping them fight their disease.

Wine and Strokes: Studies show that wine helps prevent strokes! Scientists figure that the alcohol breaks up blood clots and increases HDL ("good") cholesterol in the bloodstream. This keeps the arteries clean. Note that this helps with the common ischemic stroke, but not with the rare hemorrhagic stroke, which is sudden bleeding in the brain.

Wine as a Soother: Wine is a calming influence, something which may seem incidental but should not be forgotten. The fact that a dinner is accompanied by a drink which helps the body relax and unwind can help the mental transition between work and relaxation. Also, people fighting other illnesses can combat them better when calm and focused.

Wine and General Health: Numerous studies have found that those who drink 2-5 glasses a day regularly have a much lower mortality rate, and are healthier than those who drink none. Wine and Ulcer Prevention, Newsweek reported in May 99 that a study showed how wine helps prevent ulcers. In a study of 1800 people, the scientists tested for the presence of helico bacterpylori, which causes ulcer infections. Compared to non-drinkers, those who had one glass of wine a day had 7% fewer of these bacteria. Those who drink two glasses a day had 18%, and those who drank 3 or more glasses had 1/3 fewer bacteria.

Wine and Cancer: Numerous studies show that red wine helps fight cancer. Red wine is one of the richest sources for resveratrol, which helps supress cancer. Mice injected with reserveratrol not only experienced slower tumor growth, but also 98% fewer skin tumors.

Here in the US, millions of people are addicted to toxic, mind altering, body destroying pills, in an attempt to allieviate mental and physical disorders. The medical and pharmacutical industries are getting rich off of the peoples ignorance, and destroying lives in the process. Besides the obvious fact that these people need true spiritual and physical help, they would be much better off mentally and physically, if they allieviated their disorders with a moderate amount of red wine. However, any healthy, natural cure to ANY illness is always shot down by an establishment that gets rich off the suffering and ignorance of the people.
All of this is just presented as information, for you to use as you see fit. If daily red wine consumption does not fit into your life, I've seen data that indicates that red wine once or twice a week will have dramatic positive effects. For example, tracking the stroke incidence of over 13,300 Danes for 16 years, a report states that, compared with abstainers, individuals who said they drank red wine on a monthly, weekly, or daily basis had a 16%, 34%, and 32% reduced risk of stroke, respectively. The researchers found "no association between intake of beer or spirits on risk of stroke." So in this instance, red wine once or twice a week is the most beneficial. Red wine, along with a vegetarian diet, lots of RAW fruits and vegetables, moderate weight lifting for HGH release, and moderate cardiovascular exercise all combine for the healthiest lifestyle. All of these will produce optimum benifits.

And for people who say it is wrong to encourage people to drink, remember, Jesus Himself drank wine, and his first miracle was the act of turning water into wine. Undoubtedly, people may misuse wine, just as they misuse food and become fat and unhealthy, or misuse sex and become diseased and addicted to sex. This does not mean these things are inherently evil.
It only serves as an example of how we can use something with wisdom, and be blessed by it, or be a fool, and be cursed by the very same thing.
