Oil and Grease from Concrete

Water alone can remove dirt from concrete, but cleaning chemicals are often needed to remove specific stains. Many contractors recommend spraying the stain with a chemical and let it sit for about 15 minutes before power washing the area. Removal of oil from parking lots, drive-throughs, and other concrete pavements is the most common concrete power-washing application.
In addition to hot water, an alkaline degreaser will greatly increase removal rates of oil and grease.
Hot water lifts the oil from the concrete, and the degreaser emulsifies the oil, allowing it to be flushed from the surface.
Some contractors use at least a little degreaser for most jobs, even to remove dirt, which can be somewhat oily.
Alkaline cleaners are also the preferred chemical for cleaning soot from concrete.

1st Method for Grease & Oil
1. 1 small container of Portland cement. About $3.00
2. 1 Box Tide powder
3. Stiff scrub-brush or broom
4. Rubber Gloves
Lightly wet down the area to be cleaned.
Sprinkle equal amounts of tide and Portland cement over the stain.
Use the brush and scrub the mixture until it becomes a thick paste.
You can add a little extra water if needed.
Let it sit for 5 minutes, covering the stain.
Once it has sat for 5 minutes, add some more water and scrub for a few more minutes then hose it off competely.
Repeat if necessary.
Make sure to rinse the areas well and don't let the mixture dry out while you're letting it sit.
It will become almost impossible to remove if it dries.
The portland cement should pull the oil out of the concrete, and the tide should clean the surface.
2
Using a stiff long handled brush, scrub stain with concentrated detergent suds.
Rinse well with hose.
Dry and repeat if necessary.
Sprinkle "dishwasher" detergent (dry) on wet concrete.
Let it stand a few minutes; pour boiling water on area.
Scrub and rinse.
Use rubber gloves on hands.

Commercial Products:
One brand is Garage and Driveway Cleaner by Red Devil Co. available in paint or/and
hardware stores.
It can also be used on blacktop surfaces.
Other similar brands may be available in your area.
4
On wet oily surface of concrete, sprinkle with trisodium phosphate.
Allow to stand 15 to 30 minutes, then scrub with stiff brush and hot water.
Rinse with clean water.
Do not use on asphalt.
5
Dissolve a cup trisodium of phosphate in 1 gallon of hot water.
Pour over stained cement surface generously and allow to soak 15 to 20 minutes.
Scrub vigorously with stiff brush or broom.
Rinse off with hose.
Repeat if necessary.
Do not use on asphalt.
6
Scrub the concrete with a grease solvent to remove as much as possible of the grease stain.
Have good ventilation and avoid spark or flame as solvents are flammable.
Benzine, often recommended, can ignite, just from a spark from friction or rubbing.
7
Mix 1 part sodium citrate to 6 parts water and 6 parts glycerine and add enough whiting or fuller's earth
to make a thick paste.
Spread paste on oil or grease stain.
Let stand 1 week.
Add new paste when it dries.
Flush with water after brushing dry paste away.
Repeat if necessary.
Rust:
Heavy rust stains can penetrate deeply into concrete, so they can be tough to remove completely.
Cleaners containing oxalic acid are most effective.
Graffiti:
Graffiti can be very difficult to remove, depending on the type of paint used.
Several proprietary chemical strippers are available, many of which contain a citrus-based solvent, methylene chloride, or potassium hydroxide.
Citrus-based solvents are the least aggressive and may not work on certain paints, but they are the safest to use and often have less-stringent disposal requirements.
For best results, allow products containing potassium hydroxide to soak into the concrete surface for several hours before power washing.
These products also require a subsequent application of an acid neutralizer.
Graffiti also can be removed by a special attachment that includes a tungsten-carbide nozzle that meters sand into the water stream before it exits the nozzle.
But the sand will etch the concrete, which may not be desirable.
In recent years, softer sodium bicarbonate abrasives have been used with power washers to remove graffiti from concrete
