Adenovirus:
There are two kinds type 1 and as you could have guessed the next one, type 2.
Type 1 can cause infectious hepatitis and respiratory infections. Older puppies can recover from hepatitis but younger guys usually don't recover. It causes us to get a fever, diarrhea and eye, liver and kidney damage.
Type 2 also causes infectious hepatitis and canine cough as you humans refer to it.
Bordetella:
This is a bacteria that causes respiratory illnesses that I can also catch or give to your puppy. Us pomeranians and older puppies are more at risk for respiratory illnesses. Signs are a dry hacking cough that causes us to gag. Usually goes away by itself.
Incubation period is 2-14 days.
May be treated with cough suppressants to provide comfort during natural recovery.
Two other options for Kennel cough are injectable and intranasal vaccination.
But be alert to severe cases of infectious tracheobronchitis which frequently progress to pneumonia.
Coronavirus:
This virus has to do with my intestines. If a young puppy gets it the puppy could get diarrhea, dehydrate and die.
Distemper:
75% of us that aren't protected can get it. Often fatal. Some warning signs are lethargy, seizures, fever, diarrhea and watery eyes and nose.
Leptospirosis:
A bacterial disease that can be spread to other animals and also humans. It causes damage to our livers and kidneys. Signs are muscle stiffness, fever, depression, vomiting, dehydration, blood clotting and anorexia.
Lyme disease:
Humans and animals get this disease from the bite of a deer tick. In us puppies you can tell if we have it if we become suddenly lame and or have bad pain, swollen joints and we don't really want to move. Because it hurts so much animals get very depressed with this disease. Maybe humans do too I don't know that for sure though. But you can look at human web pages, this info is just for us puppies.
Parainfluenza:
With healthy older puppies like me, this is concidered a minor
respiratory infection. It also is another cause of canine cough and can be bad for a
puppy to catch it.
Signs for this is a cough, red tonsils, runny nose and a fever.
Parvovirus:
We can spead this one to each other. So if your puppy has it please keep them away from me so I can stay health. Again this one invades my intestines causing me to vomit and it gives me diarrhea and of course dehydration which if severe enough will kill me. This one even gets into my bone marrow and lymphoid tissue.
Rabies:
Every state has a law that requires all of us pets to be vaccinated against Rabies. This is a good law cause it protects me and all my friends and humans too from this terrible disease. When this disease attacks our brains, we forget who we are and are mad at everybody. So if you see an animal that you think has rabies stay as far away as possible. When the signs of rabies appears, death is not far behind.
5 Common Worms:
I can come in contact with dangerous parasites every time you take me out for a walk or to go play. I get it from contact with soil or bites from a mosquito. But please don't stop taking me or my friends out for a walk cause we really like going out.
Heartworm, hookworm and roundworm can be prevented. All puppies are born with them or get them soon after birth from our mothers. Lets talk about each one separately. I hope I'm not boring you. If you are bored give your puppy his or her turn at the keyboard.
Hookworms:
Hookworms are 1/4 to 3/4 inch long and hook to our intestines with teeth shaped like hooks. I guess thats how they got there name. Young puppies are in the most danger but they can kill older puppies too by eating all the blood. The eggs of the Hookworm passes through the infected animal in the feces. Then turn into larvae and are swallowed by another puppy or gain entry through the foot pads. Mother's can give hookworms to her pups through the milk.
Tapeworms:
These worms would live in my guts, if I had any. Worms I mean not guts. If I accidentally eat an infected flea that I been biting at, I will get tapeworms. The worms then grow in my gut and the eggs get washed out in my feces. Then another Flea comes by and picks through my waste and eats the eggs and the whole thing starts all over again. yuk
Roundworms:
These little devils can cause lung, liver and brain damage. And if not treated in time can cause death. Signs are poor growth in puppies, vomiting and colic.
Heartworm:
Heartworms can live in our hearts for as long as 5 years and they can get 6 to 12 inches in that amount of time. We can have congestive heart, liver and or kidney failure. Now we get these parasites when a mosquito bites us and the larvae get under our skin. Then they molt for 3 to ten days, then they molt a second time for 55 to 70 days. Three months after that the worms mate and start all over again. There are literally millions of larvae and eggs in an infected puppies blood.
Whipworms:
Whips as we puppies call them, cause bloody diarrhea, anemia, dehydration, and loss of weight. They are 1 an a half to 3 inches long and live in our large intestines. With there mouth they cut the intestine and eat the blood.
